News Walter A. Bell, Chairman, Swiss Re American Holding Corporation, Joins the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation National Board of Governors
Walnut Creek, CA, July 26, 2010--The board of governors of the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) announced the appointment of Walter A. Bell, Chairman, Swiss Re American Holding Corporation, to their national board of governors. The IICF combines the collective resources and talents of the insurance industry to give back to communities through grants, volunteer service and leadership.
Mr. Bell has a long and distinguished 25-plus-year career, having served in a multitude of public and private sector roles including his position as the insurance commissioner for the State of Alabama (2003- 2007). While Commissioner, he also served as President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and Vice Chairman of the IAIS Executive Committee. He is a retired Vice President of Diversity Marketing for the MONY Group (1983-2003). Currently, Mr. Bell serves as the non-executive chairman of Swiss Re America Holding Corporation and certain other U.S. affiliates of Swiss Re.
“Mr. Bell brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the national board and his leadership will provide strong guidance as we expand the industry foundation into additional regions of the country”, said Bruce Basso, Chairman of the Board of Governors.
As a sitting member of the Board of Directors of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, Mr. Bell is the organization’s first international member. He is a Director on the Board of the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health and holds memberships with the Partnership of New York, the Financial Services Roundtable, the Economic Club of New York and the Institute of International Bankers.
He is a former trustee and graduate of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. He is also a trustee of the Mobile Arts and Sports Association and past trustee of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. He has served in various capacities in numerous charitable and civic endeavors in both Mobile and New York, and has been honored in both cities for his civic leadership.
