News INSURANCE INDUSTRY FOUNDATION HOSTS CAREER DAY Institute for Student Achievement Students to Learn about Insurance Careers
NEW YORK, February 22, 2010 – On February 25, 2010, the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) is providing an insurance career day for over 50 students who are part of the Institute for Student Achievement (ISA) program in New York City public schools. The career day program has been planned and staffed by volunteers from insurance companies and associations who are part of IICF: ACE Group, Aon Benfield, A.J. Gallagher, the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of New York, Swiss Re, Wells Fargo Insurance Services, and Zurich. Swiss Re is hosting the event at their New York midtown office, and all companies are contributing human resources and supplies for the event. Additional companies who have provided materials for the event are Chubb & Son, Crump, Lancer Insurance, and Travelers. Kevin Hooks, formerly of State Farm, currently with Webber Shandwick, is the keynote speaker.
The ISA staff has worked hand-in-hand with IICF to plan and deliver a program that will be meaningful to their students. The goals of the program are to encourage and inspire the students to continue to pursue their education and to consider the insurance industry for a career when they complete their education. The IICF team will share information about the myriad of interesting career possibilities in the industry, the importance of the industry to individuals and to business, and the stability of the industry.
IICF learned about the ISA program and track record of transforming failing schools through their grants program. ISA is a 2009 IICF grant recipient. ISA schools — often in the most challenging areas where graduation rates have been as low as 35% — have graduated as many as 90% of their seniors with nearly 90% of those graduates going on to college.
“Our career day is an excellent example of what IICF is all about”, said IICF Executive Director, Elizabeth Myatt. “Competitive insurance company volunteers have been working together for nearly a year to plan and execute this excellent program. Giving back to these students and sharing enthusiasm for their work in the industry is the priority for our volunteers. We are proud to be able to help our partner ISA in their work with these talented students.”
About the Institute for Student Achievement
ISA helps school districts create small public high schools (100 students per grade) that provide a safety net of support for all students within a culture of high academic expectations. For the 18,000 students in 80 ISA partner schools in five states – students from underserved areas where the dropout rate has been 50% or higher - a well-rounded, academically-rigorous, college preparatory education is now the reality. More than 80% of ISA’s students graduate on time and more than 80% of those graduates go on to college. Using this small high school model combined with innovative, inquiry-based instruction, intensive student support and family involvement, ISA’s teachers, principals, coaches and counselors prepare our nation’s most disadvantaged students for significant achievement within a highly competitive 21st Century economy.
